Khin San Yu LANDUSE/LANDCOVER CHANGES IN PHYU TOWNSHIP This paper aims to landuse/landcover changes in Phyu Township using Remote Sensing (RS) & Geographical Information System (GIS). In this paper, Phyu Township is located in the eastern part of Bago Region. There are two major modes of transport in the study area. One follows the railway line passing through nearly 30.57 kilometers (19 miles) within the study area. There are two roads; one is Yangon Mandalay Highway and the next route is Yangon Mandalay Expressway selected to find out the relationship between landuse/ landcover changes. The analysis of the present study was only from 2000 and 2018 data. Landuse and landcover maps were prepared using Landsat-7 Nov (2000) and Landsat-8 Nov (2018) and ground checked during the field survey. The main aim of this research work is to identify the spatially changes of landuse/ landcover in Phyu Township and its surroundings using Remote Sensing data. During 2000-2018, it was observed that the majority of the changes occurred from dense vegetation to sparse vegetation, built-up land, vacant land and water area. Transport is one of the important factors influencing the arrangement of spatial relations and creating spatial interactions in society. Access to facilities, services and socio-economic opportunities plays a critical role in the growth and decline of cities and human settlement. The different measures are tested based on their capacity to explain the spatial pattern of different landuse/landcover types. 2020
Ohnmar Myat Htoo SUITABILITY OF AGRO-PHYSICAL ELEMENTS ON PADDY AND PULSES CULTIVATION IN THANLYIN TOWNSHIP Southern District of Yangon is one of the largest crop producers especially paddy and pulses in Yangon Region. Thanlyin Township is included in the Southern District of Yangon, and contributes about 7.28 percent of the total paddy sown area of the district. Pulses are second important crop after paddy in the Thanlyin Township and it represents 12.02 percent of the total purses cultivated area of Southern District of Yangon. This paper highlights on the physical factors for assessing the suitability of crops. Generally, Thanlyin Township has suitable conditions for paddy and pulses cultivation such as favorable climate conditions with sufficient rainfall, large amount of meadow soil areas and level topographic condition. The spatial distributional pattern of crops cultivation and the potential suitable areas for crops cultivation are analyzed by using remote sensing technique and Arc Map GIS 10 software. 2020
Zin Mar Than INSTITUTIONAL PREPAREDNESS FOR MULTIPLE RISKS IN YANGON, MYANMAR Myanmar is among the most vulnerable states with respect to many kinds of natural hazards. Since 2008, when the Tropical Cyclone Nargis had such a disastrous impact, public awareness to natural hazards has been increasing. It was thus not unexpected that in 2009 the Myanmar Action Plan on Disaster Risk Reduction was introduced (last updated in 2017) and in 2013 the Natural Disaster Management Law was passed. In the Action Plan of 2017, 32 priority actions were established and related responsibilities defined for different administrative and spatial levels. Structures were defined for the specific functions and duties, and in particular for the methods and forms of collaboration between the institutions on different levels. But implementation remains weak. Moreover, the goals set for the first phase (until 2020), for instance that disaster management bodies at all levels should then be fully functional, seem somewhat optimistic. Based on this situation, the joint Myanmar and German research project aims to understand institutional preparedness and awareness for multiple natural risks – in particular cyclone, flood and earthquake risks – in the megacity Yangon. Against the background of risk governance as a key component of successful disaster risk management, the focus is on the following institutional aspects and arrangements: the structural concept of responsibilities, the institutional situation according to disaster preparedness and awareness, and collaborative issues and circumstances related to a disaster. The research employs qualitative methods to analyse 26 expert interviews (by using the software programme MAXQDA). Institutions in Yangon involved in disaster risk management were asked about their involvement and how they evaluate their preparedness and awareness. 2020
May Thu Naing GEOGRAPHIC STUDY ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN HAKHA TOWNSHIP, CHIN STATE OF MYANMAR This research paper is to analyze the Quality of Life (QOL) of the natives residing in the capital of Hakha Township of Chin State of Myanmar. It lies 96 km (60 miles) away from the Northwestern edge of Myanmar, and is adjoining to Mezoran State of India. Hakha Township lies along the motor car routes connecting the Chin hill region with the flat plain regions of Gangaw in Magway Region. Hakha is also connected by air routes of Kalay Town in Sagaing Region and the big cities of Myanmar such as Mandalay and Yangon. Nowadays, this township is facing with socio- economic difficulties. The data required for this research paper are collected by using the questionnaires, under the Selected Random Sampling Method to (550) households of (68) villages of (30) village tracts within Hakha Township. Other necessary data are collected from the offices of the township. In this research the spatial analysis on daily quality of life (QOL) has been made by means of qualitative and statistical methods by using 9 Human Development indices of UNDP (2018) with 45 variables issued by the Myanmar Human Resources Development (MHRD). According to this research, in order to get the daily QOL , it is found that the upgrading programs of the standard of living are still needed to be achieved. 2020
Naw Paw Thaw Thaw URBAN GROWTH OF TAUNGOO The population of Taungoo increased constantly. In the study area, the growth of population is caused by natural increase and the migration from nearby areas. In the present days urbanization is more quickly developed due to the immigrants from the area of countryside because of more incentive and more opportunities in urban area than that of the countryside. In this way, the number of population increased and urban area extended year by year and also the uses of land are changed. The objectives are to present the area growth of Taungoo, to investigate the supporting factors that cause urban growth of Taungoo and to predict future prospect of Taungoo. Urban area extension was caused by physical, social, economic factors and government policy. To present this paper primary and secondary data were applied. Primary data such as field observation and informal talks with native people and the responsible persons are conducted. Secondary data obtained from the respective departments. 2020
Zin Nwe Myint INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF THE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT OF MRAUK-U, RAKHINE STATE, MYANMAR Myanmar has encouraged the development of tourism since the early 1990s. Following the introduction of the reform policy after 2011, international tourist arrivals to Myanmar increased from 0.38 million in 2010 to 1.3 million in 2018. While the main tourist attractions are located in the “classical quadrangle” of Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake, remote sites are rarely visited. Among them is the ancient capital of Rakhine, Mrauk-U, which was given the status of a cultural-heritage zone in Myanmar in 1996. The literature assumes that if a destination can identify and satisfy the needs and aspirations of tourists, then people will probably make repeated visits and spread positive news of the site by word of mouth (Gnanapala, 2015). This highlights the important role of tourists and their perceptions in direct relation to the tourism development of a destination area. Against this background, this study aims to investigate international tourists’ perceptions and satisfaction on visiting Mrauk-U in order to improve the services and management of the tourist industry. Understanding the perceptions of international tourists further enhances marketing strategies, reducing negative impacts and implications to enable better destination management. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 2018 for the research project. A total of 58 questionnaires were collected (more than 50% response rate) and qualitative interviews with international tourists (seven interviews of between 15 and 40 min.) and local tour guides (four interviews of 60 to 100 min.) were also conducted. Some of the interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed. A situation analysis was applied and suggestions for tourism development and the better destination management of Mrauk-U given. 2020
