2941 Theingi Lwin1 and Wai Wai Oo2 THE EFFECTS OF PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING ON GRADE 11 STUDENTS’ ECONOMICS ACHIEVEMENT The study aimed to investigate the effects of problem-based learning on Grade 11 students’ economics achievement. A quantitative research method was used to compare economics achievement between the students who received instruction with problem-based learning and those who did not. The design applied was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample schools were randomly selected and the groups were intact. There were 102 participants Grade 11 students from two schools in Sagaing Township. Learning materials were selected from the Grade 11 Economics Textbook: Chapter 4 (Money and Banking). To establish the reliability of the instruments, a pilot study was conducted with (35) Grade 11 students. The reliability level of Kuder-Richardson for the pretest items was (0.97) and the value of Cronbach’s alpha for the posttest questions was (0.73). After the treatment, the data obtained were analyzed by using the independent samples t test. The results revealed that there were significant differences in economics achievement between the students who received instruction with problem-based learning and those who did not receive it at p<.01. By using Cohen’s d, the values of effect size (0.83) and (1.1) for both schools were larger than typical. It was proved that the experimental groups got better economics achievement than the control groups. This research highlights that problem-based learning is a more effective and well-equipped approach to raising economics achievement and problem solving skills. 2026
2942 Htet Wai Aung1 and Wai Wai Oo2 AN EXPLORATION OF STUDENT TEACHERS’ LEARNING STYLES AND THEIR ENGAGEMENT IN LEARNING MATHEMATICS AT SAGAING UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION The purpose of the study is to explore student teachers’ learning styles and their engagement in learning mathematics at Sagaing University of Education. A cross-sectional survey was used to get the required data. The participants were (216) mathematics specialized student teachers at Sagaing University of Education during 2023-2024 Academic Year and were selected using a simple random sampling method. Learning styles questionnaire based on Grasha-Riechmann Learning Scales (GRLSS) of Grasha (1996) and the student engagement questionnaire designed on the school’s questionnaire (SESQ) by Lam and Jimerson (2008) were used as instruments to collect data. A pilot study was made with (30) mathematics specialized student teachers at University for the Development of the National Races of the Union. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the learning styles questionnaire was (.852), and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the student engagement questionnaire was (.872). The obtained data were systematically analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank-order correlation. According to the results, most student teachers (44%) preferred the dependent learning style, and no student teacher (0%) preferred the avoidant learning style. Most student teachers (63%) had a moderate level of engagement, and the least student teachers (17.6%) had a high level of engagement. Based on the correlation results, it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between student teachers’ independent, dependent, competitive, collaborative, and participant learning styles and their engagement in learning mathematics. Thus, student teachers will be motivated to engage in learning activities that lead to improved educational outcomes if they have the opportunity to learn in their preferred learning styles. 2026
