PROMOTING GLOBAL PEACE AND TRUST THROUGH THE FIVE PRECEPTS: A BUDDHIST PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
- This paper explores how the Five Precepts of Buddhism can serve as a universal ethical framework for fostering global peace and social harmony. By analyzing their broader social implications, the paper highlights the potential of these precepts to address contemporary ethical challenges and to contribute to a more compassionate, just, and peaceful global society. The Five Precepts—abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicants—promote fundamental values of non-violence, honesty, self-restraint, and mindfulness. Although primarily intended for personal moral development, these principles extend beyond the individual to shape interpersonal relationships and social dynamics. Through fostering trust, mutual respect, and social cohesion, the Five Precepts support conflict prevention and contribute to the foundation of a just society. This paper argues that adopting these ethical guidelines globally can help address issues such as violence, corruption, and social inequality. It also underscores how the universal values embodied in the Five Precepts transcend cultural and religious boundaries, making them a viable framework for promoting peace and ethical behavior within diverse and interconnected societies.
